I walked into the COLSA organization four years ago, qualified as contract administrator but understanding nothing about software production and management or process improvement. Because of the leadership here, and my willingness to work hard and study, I was taught the details of software product release management, Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI), and process improvement. My work day now is a collage of activity that involves every aspect of software production and distribution.
My unit of COLSA West Coast Operations creates software products that allow warfighters worldwide to connect and train as they would in combat, but in a virtual environment—they don’t have to physically deploy. I lead software production teams, which requires my best efforts to identify and solve problems so that the product can reach the customer on time and within budget. Everything we do has a process, and often I have to work with the team to refine, design, or just clarify processes. We live by the motto of continual process improvement.
